About the Song: Fireflies

October 3, 2024 by Elaine About the Song, General, Twist Run Road (Album)

When I was a girl growing up in upstate New York, we would play outside in the fields and hillsides of our neighborhood until way past dark. One of our favorite past times was to wait for the fireflies to come out. We’d see one or two, then slowly more and more of the tiny little sparks of starlight would begin to gently glow, on and off, on and off, under the pine trees of the hot and humid August night.

Decades later my grown daughter called me late at night from a concert she was attending in Nashville, TN. I answered the phone and she said: “Mom!! OMG! Have you ever seen FIREFLIES?!! THEY’RE AMAZING!!!”

I hadn’t thought about those summer nights for many years, and suddenly I was back there under the trees, following the glowing beacons of the fireflies. I wrote this song not long after my daughter’s phone call.

As I worked on the song, I realized that fireflies, like all second density creatures of animal and plant life, are embued with the Love/Light that permeates all of our physical and metaphysical beingness on the planet. They receive their light from the One Creator…the same light that is in each of us, each Heart, each Soul. A firefly may carry that light always, but its glow is not always visible, just as our own light is sometimes hidden by our inner shadows. Fireflies meander…they wander…they are each a shining, solitary beacon, yet they gather in multitudes in the balmy August evening to illuminate the darkness. We are compelled to follow…we want to hold their glow, that light of fireflies.

FIREFLIES
Music/Lyrics by Elaine Lucia

Twilight falls, the evening calls from underneath the pines

Below a starlit canopy, a balmy August night

You see them start to glow so soft and low

You want to follow where they go

They lead you to where they began somewhere beyond the sun

To catch a bit of starlight, bring it back to everyone

Their tiny spark ignites your heart

Your wanderlust begins to start

You want to hold the glow

The Light of fireflies.

Their gentle beacon lights the way you follow with your Heart

On your path to Heaven, just a single footstep starts

So follow now, I’ll show you how

To take your hand and gently try to

Hold the glow

The Light of fireflies.

See the Light that shines so bright from

Fireflies that light our nights.

The Light that shines in fireflies’ the same that shines in you

Close your eyes, it never dies, it lights your way to Truth

So follow now, I’ll show you how

To take your hand and gently try again

Hold the glow

The Light of fireflies.

And when the long evening is done

We find ourselves facing the Sun.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I loved writing and recording it, and creating this video.

The vast majority of the firefly footage is from Radim Schreiber, who has been filming the beautiful and endangered fireflies for many years. Check out his wonderful website here: https://fireflyexperience.org.
